Inheriting or rediscovering a coin collection is exciting, but turning it into a fair sale takes a little preparation.
1. Don't clean the coins
Cleaning almost always reduces value to a serious collector — it can strip away the natural patina that helps confirm age and authenticity.
2. Sort by rough category
Separating coins by country, era and material makes the first conversation with a dealer much faster.
3. Photograph before you travel
Clear photos of both sides of a few representative pieces let a dealer give a useful first opinion remotely.
4. Understand how valuation works
Value depends on rarity, condition, collector demand, and current metal prices. A fair dealer explains which factor is driving their offer.
5. Get a second opinion if the collection is large
For a sizeable collection, it's reasonable to get more than one valuation before selling.
